Skunk2 produces its Titanium Retainers using 3D CAD (Computer Aided Design) and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) to make sure the design is optimized for strength and weight reduction. Engineers then test and prove the design on the engine dyno. Once the design is approved for manufacturing, engineers make sure to only use medical-grade titanium thatâ€™s been ultrasonically inspected and certified. After CNC machining, each retainer is then individually inspected to ensure proper hole diameter, taper angle, and that its free from machining defects.
Although retainers may appear easy to make, they are a critical part of the engine where quality control is even more critical than with most other parts. Material flaws and improper machining can result in incorrect valve spring installed heights and even retainer failure. Skunk2 cautions enthusiasts from using retainers made from companies that claim to have â€œengineeringâ€ capabilities but do not have practical engine building, CAD modeling, or machining experience.
